UCLA One-Day Tournament!

Not from UCLA One-Day, but of practice.
Yesterday the Psychos had their first tournament for the 2010-2011 season and there was a huge improvement throughout the day from the rookies as well as the returners, who stepped up their game to replace the shoes of this past year's graduates. And a huge thanks to UCLA for hosting their annual One Day tournament and giving our rookies an opportunity to play and watch some quality ultimate.

As we hit the fields Sunday morning, we were greeted with fog, overcast, drizzle, and very little wind. It was the perfect weather for ultimate. Coached by Jane "Austen" Griffin and Loryn Kanemaru, last season's A-team graduates, we split into two teams, X and Y. Thanks go out to both of them for helping out during the tournament and throughout the past practices. Both captains were unable to attend due to Safari practice, since they're going to NATIONALS in Florida!

I don't really know the play-by-play on Loryn's side since I was with Austen's team, but I do know one thing, our rookies are AWESOME!

Austen's team, UCSD-X, started off our first game against Cal Tech. They had a strong team with many returners and only a couple rookies. Needless to say, we lost 13-2. But on the two points we scored, there was great flow and our offense was starting to look better. Our running defense was slowly improving and for the entire tournament all our rookies set the right marks! We also played with 3 returners and 4 rookies every point, so there was a lot of playing time for the rookies as well as a lot of handling for the returners. 2 returners would handle while the third set a permanent stack, meaning all the rookies were cutting and made a lot of continuous cuts for each other and dumped it back to restart the stall count.

The next game was up against Pomona. Ending in a loss of 9-7, there was a dramatic improvement from everyone on both offense and defense. None of our scores came from big hucks, but a lot of short passes and with patience. It was impressive how the rookies were able to hold onto the disc, stay calm, and throw it to a cutter or dump it back. There were also so many rookie to rookie points and flows, it was awesome! I played as a handler for the entire tournament, and every time we scored when I was on the line, it was rarely a rookie who caught it in the endzone from a handler, but a rookie who caught it from another rookie.

Defense improved a lot this game too! There was one point where the rookies d-ed the disc at least 7 times. Our running game forced the other team to dump it back to their handler and also lead to a lot of skying on the big hucks.

Our third game was against USC and lost 4-11, but stopped their big hucks and forced them to throw shorter passes. Again, we were playing better ultimate, d-ing the disc several times while also getting some hucks in our offense as well.

Finally, we played CSU Long Beach. We scored on the first drive leading the game 1-0. We were able to slow down their offense, but eventually lost 11-1 to a returners-stacked team. Great job to everyone who played the 25 minute point and dug deep to constantly get d's after playing 3 tiresome games.

All in all, it was a great tournament and there was so much improvement from everyone. And huge props to Coach Austen for winning every disc toss and letting UCSD-X stay in our darks the entire time! And from what I heard, UCSD-Y also improved tremendously as the tournament progressed.

Again, huge props to the rookies for doing amazing at their first ever ultimate tournament and to the returners (many of whom just finished their first rookie season last year) for stepping up and leading the team. Can't wait for our next tournament, which will be the annual Sean Ryan Tournament on the weekend of November 13th. Stay tuned!

Practice this Thursday is cancelled due to UCSD's Annual Fall Fest, but check back to see if there will be another Psycho event, like a pasta feed, in place of practice. And for those of you still debating about trying ultimate, it's still not too late to join!

In related news, the UCLA One Day is coming up! This coming Sunday, the Psychos will be driving up to UCLA for a one day tournament and will likely be facing teams we'll constantly see throughout the year. Get pumped for the first tournament of the year because it's going to be a good one! The rookies will finally see what ultimate is all about and get to experience, for the first time, some quality college ultimate. UCLA is a tournament specifically designed so rookies will gain first hand knowledge about the sport. Tournaments are definitely one of the fastest ways to learn so get excited for this Sunday!

With a new school year comes a new season, filled with old traditions and both old and new players. Throughout UCSD's Welcome Week, Psychos will be roaming the campus, causing mayhem, and recruiting some rookies for the new year. We will be handing out flyers at Triton Power Hour, UnOlympics, Meet the Beach, and many more events. If you're interested in joining a social, athletic, competitive, laid-back, and outgoing club team and want to be a part of a family on campus, UCSD's Women's Ultimate is for you!

Our first practice is Thursday, September 30th out on Warren Field from 6:00 to 8:30. Bring cleats (or running shoes), water, a light shirt, a dark shirt (preferably not grey), and friends! And if you don't have any, coming out to practice will be a great way to meet new people and makes friends for the rest of your college life. Be prepared to be amazed at how fun ultimate is as a sport and how much fun we are as a team. No experience necessary!

If you like hanging out, traveling, making new friends, and the idea of being a part of a family, join ultimate! But really, even through all the advertisement and propaganda we've spread, ultimate is truly a unique sport and might even turn out to be one of the best decision of your life!

For more information, go to the Contact Us tab and email our captains. We hope to see you on the field!

To Our Dearest Punnett

On August 24th 2010, the Psychos lost one of their dearest teammate, friend, and fellow Muiron. Kendra "Punnett" Fallon was in Nepal over the summer, volunteering at an orphanage. During a trip to climb the base of Mount Everest the plane she was in crashed due to bad weather.

Punnett, you will be missed so much. Words cannot describe what happened. It's a tragedy to see someone who was so special leave us. You were hilarious, dependable, intelligent, selfless, caring, and such an amazing teammate and person to be around, both on and off the field. We are blessed to have met you, even though it was for such a short period of time. And even though it's unfair that we only got to know you for a season, it feels like we had known you our entire lives. You will always be part of the 2009-2010 Rookie Class, and a part of our Psycho family. You will always be remembered and we know there's Berserk love up there.

Thank you for showing us how a team could come together and regardless of the distance that separated us. Thank you for showing us how a community could come together for each other, when one of us fell. And thank you for being the inspiration you were.

RIP Kendra Punnett Fallon
8/27/1991 - 8/24/2010

In memory of Punnett and those who also lost their lives, a memorial has been created to better the lives of children who attend the SKY primary school in Nepal. Information on the SKY Memorial Foundation can be found here: www.skymemorialfoundation.org

More Recruitment Shirts, Less Not Recruitment Shirts

Remember when you were a rookie and people were wearing some sweet recruitment shirts that you just couldn't wait to get your hands on? Well, it's that time of year again, but this time you'll be repping that sweet V-neck! And what's more appropriate than more ultimate? Less not ultimate!

Check out this year's sicknasty recruitment shirt! Shirts are selling for $18, bring some ones. Order yours today! How do you order one? Comment below (with a shirt size)!

Current Psychos, keep in mind that we'll be using these shirts as uniforms during the fall quarter. Alas, you have no choice but to order one. Unless you want to stand out (not in the good way). And they're American Apparel! How can you say no to that? If you do say no, we'll assume that no means yes.

Shirt Logisitics
-American Apparel V neck
-Tend to run big/loose
-Available sizes: S, M, L

Wear this shirt when: you're recruiting rookies, camping with the team (because it's not a white shirt), or when you want to tell the world how you're more cool and less not more cool than them. Think about it.

Don't wear this shirt when: you're in class, especially if it's your writing class, sitting next to the grammar police, or walking through I-House. They might think you're an international student who has yet to learn grammar.

A New Team, A New Site

Psycho Ultimate has moved their site to Weebly! This site will be constantly updated with team information, tournaments, photos, the occasional video, and all the other "stuff" that defines Psycho Ultimate.
But before we move onto the next season, I'd first like to introduce our newest group of alumni, the  UCSD Class of 2010! With over 10 seniors who graduated from the Psycho program this past Spring, a whole new set of 2009-2010 rookies will be taking their places and we have abnormally large shoes to fill. It'll be a challenge, nonetheless, to replace our senior class, especially with fewer A-team returners coming back than those that left. However, with a talented roster of returning rookies and rising B-teamers, these next few years look promising, very promising.

Led by our only returning A-team senior, Sarahskye "Joule" McNees, and the third player in Psycho history to have been named captain after her rookie year, Brittany "Agave" Cabriales, this upcoming season will definitely be one to remember. So come out, watch us play, and follow us on this website (and twitter), as we make another run to qualify for Nationals!
